Packing and Storage Tips

Packing and Storage Tips

1)     Before you start:

a)     Make a list of all the items you will be packing.

b)     Buy all of the materials you will need, like boxes, markers, tape, packing material, and furniture covers.

c)     Opt for sturdy, moisture-resistant plastic containers, especially for long-term storage, as they offer better protection against humidity and pests.

d)     Purchase thick, high-quality boxes or consider reusable plastic containers for a more eco-friendly option.

2)     Packing:

a)     Distribute weight evenly in boxes, and avoid over-packing to prevent strain and injuries when lifting.

b)     Wrap fragile items in packing paper, bubble wrap, or foam sheets and place them in boxes with dividers for extra protection.

c)     Utilize original packaging for electronics and appliances, if available, to ensure proper protection.

d)     Fill empty spaces in boxes with packing peanuts, crumpled paper, or bubble wrap to prevent shifting during transit and storage.

e)     Use color-coded labels or a numbering system for easy organization and tracking of box contents.

3)     Moving in:

a)     Utilize vertical space by installing shelves or pallets to keep items off the floor and protect them from potential water damage.

b)     Consider using adjustable shelving to accommodate items of different sizes and weights.

c)     Place frequently accessed items near the front of the unit for easy access.

d)     Store items in a systematic way, grouping similar items together and placing boxes with related contents near each other.

e)     Utilize protective covers for furniture, mattresses, and mirrors to shield them from dust, scratches, and moisture.

f)      Use vacuum-sealed bags to save space and protect clothing, linens, and other textiles from moisture and pests.

g)     Keep a detailed inventory list of all items in the storage unit, including their location within the unit, for easy reference.

4)     Security and Maintenance:

a)     Choose a climate-controlled storage unit for temperature-sensitive items to prevent damage from extreme temperatures and humidity.

b)     Regularly inspect your storage unit for signs of moisture, pests, or damage and address issues promptly.

c)     Insure your stored items, either through your homeowner's or renter's insurance or by purchasing additional coverage through the storage facility.

d)     Use high-quality locks to secure your storage unit.

5)     Pest Control:

a)     Be aware that as a tenant, you are responsible for pest control within your storage unit.

b)     Avoid storing food items, as they can attract pests.

c)     Use sealed plastic containers for items that may attract pests, such as clothing and textiles.

d)     Regularly check for signs of pests and take immediate action if any are detected.
